I am watching the Exploding House MythBusters episode. http://www.mythbusters2003.net/mp4/Season%202004/Episode%2015%20-%20Exploding%20House.mp4.video My idea to find the needles would be to burn the entire stack with gasoline and then process the remaining ashes. The white bone needle should stand out in the black hashes and the metal needles can be found with a magnet or metal detector. I also think it would have been much faster than processing the hay in a machine.
